Many companies are large enough to justify having their own bookkeepers in-house. As the organisation grows, so does the complexity of the input.

Accountancy costs can rise quite steeply if the bookkeeping needs to be adjusted at the end of the year because of the lack of expertise of the employees doing the data entry. Worse still, staff can appear to be reasonably knowledgeable until the accountant checks the data at year end and discovers so many errors that the bookkeeping has to be redone.

How I can improve the quality of your Sage Input

You ask me to inspect your data entry and let you know where the problems lie. I advise on further action. In most cases this involves me training staff thoroughly so they understand what they are doing. I also adjust the data so that it can be relied upon in future.

The aim is to make a one-off effort to improve the quality of the input permanently. Thereafter I visit when the VAT return is due, or just at the year end, to ensure input quality is still at the same level. Staff can ring me with queries throughout the year and this should enable them to advance their knowledge of bookkeeping further.

Year End

You may be happy with the general quality of input to Sage by your staff but when it comes to year end you notice that accountancy fees are quite high. This could be because you are running several interconnected companies that inevitably require more complicated entries to Sage at the year end. Or there may be particular technical aspects that need to be addressed when preparing your accounts. It is not reasonable to expect a bookkeeper to know what to do in such cases.
